Sprang!

I have been trying to wrap my brain around sprang since Peter Collingwood’s book was in print and still affordable. First published in 1999, it now goes for $500 and up. Back in February, I did a little workshop with Carol James (https://www.spranglady.com/about-the-artist.html) through the Braids and Bands Society. That was helpful, but I didn’t have time to devote and still didn’t quite manage to make fabric. This week, I got a notice that Youtube videos posted by someone offering classes through a page I follow on Facebook were about to be taken down. I spent several hours watching, warped up a rectangular embroidery frame, and spent more hours practicing, re-reading class notes, untwisting, trying again, and even re-warping when I broke the threads from overuse. Suddenly, this afternoon, the logic of sprang penetrated and I successfully produced a tiny bag. It is utterly useless, but I am feeling pretty smug right now. My biggest tip came from the Facebook class – do your warps in two different colours, as it is much easier to see when you make a mistake and to track the diagonal pattern when you get it right.
